Show A WARNING FROM A DEMOCRATIC PAPER. The Panama canal tolls question has brought sorrow to more than one statesman. Here Is an excerpt from the New Orleans Item, warning the senators from Louisiana that they are about to commit a blunder: "Theodore Roosevelt dug the Panama Pana-ma canal for tho American people. "Woodrow- Wilson and William J. Bryan are doing what they can to make it the grave of the Democratic party. "As surely as the people are made to understand the surrender of this nation's sovereignty, -and the betrayal of its property, to Great Britain, just so surely will they repudiate those responsible for it. "Once commit the Democratic party to this violation of past tradition and present duty, nnd the country will cast the party out of power. You gentlemen gentle-men who get your seats from overwhelmingly over-whelmingly Democratic districts and states will be replaced by Democrats who represent their people's devotion to national honor and public wolfnre. "Mr. Wilson and Mr. Bryan have already made parts of Louisiana debatable de-batable political ground. They are now bent on bringing back the Republican Repub-lican and Progressive parties to tho control of the nation. Mr. Wilson's motives wc believe to be pure; Mr. Bryan's negligence of his duties and proved spoilsmanship leave his open to question. Whatever their motives, however, their reason in surrendering our canal to Britain, whatever it may be for they have not told it Is UNSOUND. UN-SOUND. Don't help them to wreck the party, and be yourselves caught in the falling ruins." |
