Show II I '" ' TT I KING BAGGOT, UNIVERSAL, "STAR AND STAR OFl UNIVERSAL, WINS Bf WA Y His Appearance in Person, Together With His Company, on Stage of the Republic, Creates a Furore Unprecedented Un-precedented in Picture Annals. New York in matters theatrical has always . been ' the criterion ; by which actors and plays have been accepted by the rest of the country. Therefore, to be a Broadway star and to have one's name emblazoned in electric lights over the Republic Theatre, one of the most famous' theatres in Gotham", is an honor which only comes to few of .the countless count-less thousands of aspiring thespians. Never before have thc'policc reserves been called out to hold back the mob clamoring for admission to sec an actor. Never before has a moving picture idol's appearance in person on the boards met with such success as King Baggot is experiencing ex-periencing in "The Baited Trap." This is because this Universal star, and the star of the Universal, richly deserves the recognition an appreciative public is showering upon him. For years he has by hard work and by that infinite capacity for talcing pains which some characterize as genius, steadily forged to the front in motion pictures. Not only docs he direct, but plays the lead, and he cither writes the photodramas in which he appears or rewrites them. The New York public which has admired his work on the screen is flocking to sec him in the flesh and has found that their idol has not feet of clay. There is no disillusionment such as unfortunately characterized " the appearance of several sev-eral other motion picture favorites. The ' photodrama ilelf is a clever idea. It shows how motion pictures arc made. After several reels arc thrown on the screen and the action of the piece approaches the climax, the picture suddenly sud-denly stops, the lights go up and King 'Bagger and his company who have enacted the roles in the motion pictures step out of Shadowland, appear on the stage in profriac persotiae and enact the remaining scenes. Frank Crane, director of Imp features, fea-tures, has begun the production, of a three-reel drama entitled "On the Chess Board of Fate," written by W. Hanson Durham. It is tlx; first thrce-rcclcr to be attempted by 'Mr. Crane since his affiliation with the Universale Imp cotn-pan', cotn-pan', and he considers it one of the best dramas that has come -under his hand- in a long time. The author, Mr. Durham, was formerly editor of the Vitagraph's western company and a director under Rollin S. Sturgeon. The story centers around an old doctor who tries to use his daughter as a. pawn to save himself from prison. Walter Miller, Mil-ler, formerly star-of the Biograph company, com-pany, will enact the lead. Alexander Gaden will play the heavy. |
