Show CANDIDATES ASKED TD TELL WHERE ! THEY STAND , Editor Standard In June, 111, the people of this city were called upon to decide between prohibition, and high license and strict regulation, of the liquor traffic A large nutubet of people, who were opposed to prohibition, pro-hibition, urged the passage of an ordinance or-dinance providing for an earlier clos ing hour and more strict regulation In response to this demand, an ordinance ordi-nance was passed requiring all saloons sa-loons to be closed at 9 o'clock p. m This ordinance was passed by the city council, the members of which were overwhelmingly opposed to prohlbl tion, and had undoubtedly much to do with the defeat of prohibition. Those of us who voted for prohibition ac cepled In good faith, the result o( that election, but insist that good faith on the part of our opponents re quire that they abide by the or nance which did so much to defeat prohibition, and that a few persons Interested In-terested in the liquor business should not be permitted to revive the contro-ersy contro-ersy in an attempt to now extend the time of closing. I submit that every opponent of saloons and every person who really believes in strict regula tion, tuufuiu luir a&aiuBi any kttiiui- date who favors reopening the locel liquor fight, and thus arouse strife and controversy and subordinate the general gen-eral welfare and material interests of the city, to the Interest of a few men who want to increase their profits by selling more liquors. Two years ago, there was, no doubt, honest apprehension on the part ol quite a number of people in this city, that the closing of the saloons at 9 o'clock hore, while in Salt Lake they were permitted to continue business till midnight, would Injuriously affect the business in this city But more than two yearB experience had dem onstrated that their fears were groundless for it is an undeniable fact that business conditions In Ogden Og-den are Immeasurably better than In Salt Lake. During the past two yearn while we have had 9 o'clock dosing more money has been spent In new buildings than in the four years next preceding, and during my sixteen years of residence In Ogden I hav-i never known of so few desirable reai dences for rent I think the candidates for mayor and commissioner should make known their position on this question. For a man to say that he is for a "great or" or a "bigger" Ogden, means noth lng. The people are entitled to know whether a candidate is In favor of reopening re-opening this local liquor fight, ot whether he Is In favor of abiding by the decision of 1911 Mr. Weatherby has openly declared himself in favor of maintaining the present status, and I have been told that Mayor Fell is also In favor of that course, but he has made no public statement on the subject Captain Hulaniskl states that ho favors an extension of time for closing, and Mr. Wagner favors keeping saloons open all nigh How do the other candidates stand ? They ought to be willing (or the voters to know Respectfully, ( Signed i A W, AGEE October 18. 1913. |
