Show URGED TO TAKE THE MIDLAND TRAIL R W Russell of Illinois, who is touring the country overland in an automobile, tells of the keen interest taken by Salt Lake people in diverting divert-ing travel from the Overland trail and arross the mountains from Echo can yon to Salt Lake. Mr Ruasell broke a small clutch cm his machine at Castle Rock, 66 miles east of Ogden on the Union Pacific, and had to come to Ogden to get a new one. He returned to his camp this morning and will Journey on today to-day toward the golden west via Salt Lake and the white salt desert op the Western Pacific Mr. Russell says he has met emls Baries of the so-called "Midland trail all along the Overland route, telling him that he was on the roughest automobile au-tomobile road In the United States and that he should have turned his course at Denver and followed the line of the Midland to Salt Lake. He also was adlned that the road down Weber canyon to Ogden was almoat impassable and that the only saie route was over Parley's canyon divide di-vide to Salt Lake. Summit county men were also along the line tellinc; Russell to evade Ogden, claiming that the road through their county was tRo best and the only real plcturesquo line of travel In the Waaatch range. Mr. Russell was also told that the route across the barren wastes of tho Krcat white desert of salt and alkali west of Salt Lake Is the official line for automobiles and that it is In splendid splen-did repair Thus he was induced to go that way.
