Show CLARKE ONE OF A GANG OF THIEVES The man who claims he is KmmcM E. Clarke and who was arrested when the police received telegrams from ,W. York and Ontario to the effect that the man in Ogden had tele graphed to New York for money over the signature of Kmruett E Clark-? when the genuine Clarke is in Otto-wa, Otto-wa, was charged with petit larceny this morning. The charge was made out following a visit yesterday of Detectives De-tectives George Wardlaw and Charles Pincock to the room occupied by Clarke In the Reed There the detectives detec-tives found the safety razor and other articles which were in the grip stolen from l M Hood of Salt Lake, who had loft his grip in the Hemenway & Moser cigar store The grip was found last evening In the Pabst sa loon. A cording to the police, the description de-scription of the man as given by tho bartender at the Pabst aprees with Clarke. Clarke had a black eye and wore a llchi heeked suit which made identification easy Clarke has hired an attorney and has written for money, but claims thnt ir will be two weeks before funds arrive ar-rive He is confident, however, that he will receive all the money he needs. If Clarke hired a boy to get the grip from the store after Hood had left it, he must have hurriedly made awaj with (he evidence because he was arrested shortly after the Krip was stolen Hood did not come from Salt Lake until 11 o'clock and had Just left the grip but a few minutes when It was taken Detective Pincock arrested ar-rested Clarke shortly after noon as Clarke was on his way to a telegraph office. The police believe that Clarke is one of a few clever crooks who tral over the country engaged in petTv thievery, sending the stolen articles east to "fences" to be sold By stay inc In cood hotels, the police vlaim. the men avoid suspicion |
