Report on tree planting done on Gold Star Driveway Ogden Oden Utah 1926 1926 1823 The first planting was WM done on the Ogden Gold Star Drive project In April 1923 when Ii 52 Norway maples from the Utah Nursery company were set out out outon on each side aide of Madison avenue In the cemetery The holes were mostly du dug by the undersigned and Theron R some Iome some little help being furnished by members ot of the American Legion All the planting was as done by these two that spring In spite of ot the tact fact planted that many of ot the trees tree were plant plant- ed upon apparently unfavorable sites where the soil soli wen waa as large largely I the trash and rubbish of ot the dumps or coarse rubble the trees did well They were watered well by the city men at the cemetery and the water was Vas led directly to the root layers by lengths length of ot drain tile We that were ere furnished for this purpose purpose by the Ogden Sewer Pipe ond and Clay Co NAMES SAllIES OF OP HEROES The trees were also staked and tied to the stake stakes at tills this time as bythe a asa precaution against damage by the canyon winds during the first few tew years On these stakes small aluminum labels were affixed bearing the name of ot the man to whose memory the tree was plant plant- ed planted bythe This work was also done by the same two men with tho the as- as as assistance of ot Mrs Eldredge's son The soldat lumber was WIlS furnished 1 or sold at Lumber a low price by the Eccles Lum Lum- ber company Something like six or eight trees died the first year all from rather obscure causes causes probably Inferior root systems rather than anything in the soil soli or the care decided The trees were generally a ed superior lot and the success was really much greater than would reasonably be expected In In the spring of ot 1924 these were replanted with stock from Moores Moorea Nursery furnished Nursery furnished tree free oa as I remember It Four of ot these died after afler having started to make goo good 1 growth I think that this was due duo to very hot dry Juno June weather before the trees were well rooted I do not recollect who planted themen I these these I think It was the men from the cemetery under my SUpervision In In the spring ot of 1925 1825 these tour four were wore replaced with extra large stock from the Utah Nursery company the tho planting being don b by city men It was waa felt the failure might bo be due to poor soil ant and so new earth arth was put In the holes All four falle failed 1 and were again replaced In the spring spring- ot of 1926 with stock from the Moore Nursery theold I personally dug out the old trees trots and put In the new ones at this time limo and could find no reason for tor the bad luck with these few trees In In the fall tall of ot 1926 a little pruning of ot some very bad places wee was done Respectfully submitted FREDERICK S S BAKER Regent EL St Berkeley Cal CaI I I I i i I I I I I |
