Show federation of labor is to help obtain eight hour day PUts burg nov 14 the second days session of the american federation 0 labor convention was rapped to order promptly at 9 by president gompers he called john ell second vice president to the chair and james duncan first vice president read the annual report of the executive council it gave in detail many of the points covered in the reports of the president secretary and treasurer the coppersmiths made application for a charter but it was denied and the organization was urged to affiliate with tho amalgamated sheet metal workers international alliance arrangements range ments have been made for the consolidation of the two organizations there are a large number of organizations not now affiliated with the federation and the executive council urges that additional efforts be made to bring them into the federation it Is recommended that unions establish funds and insist on higher dues in the matter of the protection of children the executive council bad bills introduced in the legislatures of many states prohibiting the employment of children in mills factories mines and industrial establishments the progress made during the year was not entirely satisfactory and president gompers was authorized to enlist the assistance of other organizations in securing the passage of legislation in all states prohibiting the employment 0 child labor it was decided that in the future the executive council shall not interfere in disputes between labor tlona unless the unions involved have exhausted all means to bring about an adjustment of the difficulties an assessment of one cent a member a week for a period of tour weeks was levied on the entire membership 0 the federation for the benefit at the international typographical union in its efforts to establish an eight hour work day in the job and commercial printing establishments in the united states and canada the typographical union has levied a substantial assessment for that purpose and all organizations are urged to render all tha assistance possible to the printers in their efforts to establish the eight hour day by january 1 1906 the question of immigration was given consideration by the executive committee it was shown that over foreigners reached these shores last year and that there would be no decrease in the number this year it was urged that efforts be made to organize this foreign element as the low wages tor which they now work are not only insufficient but have a bad effect on all american boilers toilers toi lers the auditing committees report showed that the federation Is in a good condition and that the report of treasurer lennon was correct the committee on credentials reported in favor of seating C P shea president of the teamsters union the recommendation men dation was adopted the committee also recommended all the delegates 0 pie unions delinquent of the assessment levied by the federation of labor for tho benefit of the sti aking new england textile workers bo seated as they had made satisfactory arrangements with the secretary the american federation of musicians offered a resolution which was adopted thanking the labor unions of san francisco for supporting mayor scharnitz nitz against the enemies of organized labor A telegram was ordered sent to mayor him of tho action taken at the afternoon session the discussion of tuberculosis its prevention and cure will be taken up |
