pride his children about abts bedside bis cifes arms abou thim with his head on her shoulder and her name on bis lips he passed to dreamless and eternal sleep his strong hands folded in their final rest just at a time when their continuous labors during forty five years were yielding their richest results in the form of prosperity to the community in which he made his home from the quiet hillside where stands today grave may be beard the ceaseless hum of numerous industrial activities which his foresight planned and his genius guided his work for ogden began when but sixteen years of ago he had amassed a comfortable competence and might have retired assured of every material comfort that money could purchase but he worked on steadily carefully persistently wealth camo to him but what he received in the way of profits from his labors and investments was ekau indeed compared with the benefits they yielded the community in re sturn every acre of land in weber county receives a good measure of its valise because of enterprises established and conducted by thomas D dee and his associates his material successes notable though they be are the least in am tance of results of his life and ats effect on the people of hla city and state he was a barmon izer of differences he showed his associates socia tes hat questions over which ahw vere differing were really korfant in principle and that all might wor happily together regardless of vs vang political beliefs or religious creeds his was always tho bright amle and the cheery word no matter whar were the perplexities and exactions of ahe hour to he circle of younger business m n who gathered about him he was nor merely a financial sponsor and associate te but an inspiring example judicious advisor and loyal friend to them as to the members of his family whom may god strengthen in ahja grip ous hour his taking away brings the keenest cf sorrows for tham his place can never be filled judge dee waa man quick in sympathies but blowin blow in bestowing his full friendship once placed it remained steadfast and his friends of forty years ago are bis friends today whilo all his associates will remark so long as they may live the and the strength of abts noble character no of the community has given more freely of his time and talents to the advancement of the general good than has judge thomas D dee for thirty five years he was in practically continuous aa a school trustee or member of the board of education this position brought practically no remuneration but of all I 1 his varied activities no enterprise received mora constant or loyal service than did the public school system he was ready at any time tt neglect hla personal business it need be to advance the interests of the schools no detail was too trivial no baak was too large to receive his personal attention abilities and loyalty such as he brought to bear on management of he public school system could not have been purchased at any price it is pleasant to record that in the community where he lived his magnificent services were coming to bs recognized ever since the establishment by legislative enactment of a city bloard of education thomas D dea wag chosen for the position as member of the board from the third ward for the past eight years he has been president of that organization preceding the last school election the organization of the political party opposed to that of judge dee declared that the election should be partisan and called a meeting to nominate an opposing candidate this primary however refused to place a candidate in nomination against the then member and an endorsement indorsement Indor of judge dee was only prevented by a technical ruling that such an unheard of proceeding was out of order later an opposing candidate was put in the field by the party organization in a few days he yielded to demands of ahls and resigned finally another candidate was induced to accept the nomination on the ground that party interests demanded that opposing candidate sandi date be in the field all the energies dt his party organization which everywhere svery where else was dominant were brought to bear to elect this candidate but the voters of the third ward returned judge dee with a majority reater than ever before the history if politics affords no finer tribute to character than the incidents it that campaign afforded to thomas duncombe dee when the last new school building was erected his asso slates on the board during his absence the state unanimously voted to name the structure the dee school t stands just across the street over the cemetery where today will ie placed the body of honored lead his truest friend could not wish or a more fitting monument AT THE ballantyne ot he was beloved beloved by all president middleton in the opening prayer referred to the occasion that had brought them together and asked that god be with them during their devotions the choir then sang god moves in a mysterious way the first speaker was the hon C C richards he said in part it Is forty four years ago that thomas dee left his nativo country and migrated to these shores and took up his home in this county and city which then had a population of but souls A stranger in a strange land 1600 miles from the frontiers of civilization he began the career that haa just terminated so gloriously in our midst i in closing the speaker referred to the interest that judge dee took in the public school system and his connection with the ecclesiastical affairs of weber stake he referred to the many positions that the judge had held to his home life and to his qualities as a man dr conroy representing the board of education was the next speaker ho said on occasions like this I 1 usually kes p silent but on this occasion I 1 will break that silence it Is seldom in alte that we meet such a man as was judge dee I 1 have only known him about biye years but during that period I 1 have known him well no one could know judas dee in a acquaintance it took time you had to see him in every walk of life and follow him in every days work in order to appreciate him 1 I admired the deceased because whatever circumstances might arise he was always rue to the best interests of everyone and that is the best recommendation that could be given a man the doctor spoke of the work in the early days of judge dee in behalf of education and stated that it was due to the efforts of the deceased that school system of ogden Is what it is today A quartette consisting of mrs aall son miss alice flowers fred tout and chareton ferrin ahn sang in memoriam GOT cutler for the state paid a great tribute to the deceased saying that in the death of judge dee utah had lost one of its best As a member of the b oard of tion the speaker said judge dee had discharged the duties of that office with fidelity and trust although it had meant a great loss to financially miss lulu matchell Ml sang a soprano ablo sometime Som well understand president joseph F smith was the closing speaker he prefaced his remarks by expressing his kind regards for one of his brethren who had been so unexpectedly called away 1 I have bever regarded judge dee precisely in the same light in which his character has been represented by the eloquent speakers ajio have addressed you I 1 believe him to have been not only a man full of integrity to every public trust and to every duty devolving upon him as a citizen and a member of the community in which he lived but I 1 have also regarded him as a man filled with loyal integrity toward tho church to which he belonged L believe that every man will be judged according to his works and will receive the reward that will ba out to him by a just judge for good or for evil strictly in accordance with the works that have been performed and tho possessed by the person I 1 do not believe that any man will be exalted in the presence of god without having a knowledge of god and man will be judged according to the intents and purposes of his heart but when men are contrite in heart and spirit bolest in purpose devoted to that which they believe to be right to the extent of their ability and they are found ever seeking and endeavoring deavo ring to ameliorate the condition of mankind I 1 do not believe that ayea have seen nor ears heard nor has it entered into the heart of man the extent of the glory and reward that will be given unto such 1 I believe my friends and brethren and sisters according to the scrip dureg that the only name under heaven by which man can be exalted in the presence of almighty god a partaker with christ in the fullness of tha glory of god in the celestial kingdom is that of jesus savior of mankind I 1 be here that all men will be raised the dead and through the atonement and the resurrection of the lord jesus christ and only those who are lansed from the dead firm believers in the doctrines laid down by the savior will be permitted to enter into gods kingdom As a bellaver bell in this doctrine I 1 expect some day to have the pleasure of again meeting my friend and brother judge dee on the other side of anis vale of asars tsars possessed of immortality and eternal life and I 1 believe that we shall know each other there as we knew each other here as of te church pt god as par takers of the principles of life and salvation tha been revealed in latter days through the instrumentality of inspired mn we do not taste the sp arit of o f death here today our brother has passed to a better world to a better sphere he resumes his position in the midst of the glorious spirits of god the spirits of min who are redeemed by the blood of christ through faith repentance and obedience to his law and he will mingle with the just beyond the grave 1 I rejoice that his wife has an eternal claim upon this man and upon the children and his childrens children because god has joined them together by his authority he counseller counselled coun selled all present to follow the brilliant example which had been set them by deceased and closed with words of comfort and blessing for the widow and fatherless A duet was sung by miss matchell Mt and mr ferrin softly and tenderly jesus Is calling the benediction was pronounced by george romney at the close of the services the cortege formed
