Show GREAT prosperity bradstreets and duns review in this weeks reports give every assurance 0 an enduring prosperity the crops of the country are larger than ever and business activity is unprecedented these statements are in confirmation of the reports received by james H eckels from 1100 banks giving a summary of crop conditions dit ions mr eckels says nearly all reports relating to general business conditions show that the position ot the banks Is better than in any previous year and that they arc well prepared to finance the crops it is believed that the large financial centers will be called upon to a much less extent than heretofore to assist n the harvesting and moving of crops farmers are generally reported in prosperous condition and business on the whole Is better and more satisfactory than last year in number about three fourths of the banks report good local demands for money the remainder report a light or fair demand only one bank reported greater need for funds than its ability to supply bank deposits are reported as showing chaice from the last published statements but with a slight tendency to increase almost without exception however deposits ale grea ter than at the corresponding period last year about banks report the extension of railroads and the establishment of new manufacturing n their respective communities total invest ments ot some the general tone of all reports is favorable and where unsatisfactory conditions exist they are in all instances due to local causes the report as for publication follows the accuracy ol 01 the data collected annually tor a gerbs serbs of years from a large number of respondent co banks scattered widely throughout the country and published by us in midsummer concerning chop conditions and prospects has been proved coar as an experiment the results have convinced us not only as to the real value ot the reports re orts but also that no better lator mcd nor more dependable sources of inta matlon are available encouraged by these facts no less than by the reception accorded our efforts by the and the pub lie as well as by individual business interests both at homo airel abroad wo have again undertaken the task replies have been received from 1100 correspondent banks located tor the most part in the region roughly designated as the mississippi valley lying between ohio od the east and kansas and nebraska on the west and extending from minnesota to the gulf this territory embraces twenty one states which produce the bulk of those crops coming within the scope of our investigation namely wheat corn cotton and small grain A sufficient number of reports however have been received from call bornia oregon washington and other far western states upon which to base a fair estimate of conditions on the pacific slope tho estimates submitted by our correspondents have been summarized separately tor each state as well as in soma instances for groups of states and yield of crops is expressed in percentages as compared with the of yields of last year generally speaking all crops promise well and in most states are now sufficiently advanced and matured as to assure another bountiful harvest in many localities cold wet weather in the spring delayed planting and too much rain later retarded the growth of plants but with the exception of cotton which generally Is backward on account of wet weather the yield ot all crops promises to exceed that of 1904 we estimate that the total wheat crop will be 25 per cent corn 13 per cent oats 13 per cent ryo 14 per cent and barley 13 per cent greater than last year and that the cotton crop will ba short about 28 per cent |
