Show many persons killed and injured in wreck butte mont aug 21 nine persons were killed one fatally injured and about thirteen more or less injured in a collision between a street car filled with returning merrymakers merry makers from the columbia gardens and a freight train on the butte anaconda pacific railway rail way last night THE DEAD maggie harrington aged 19 wait ress at southern hotel maud johnson aged 19 2041 2 west galena street mrs jacobs colored south idaho street t maggie keefe aged 19 residing at f 19 east gagnon A vera naughton 14 years old highland street chris wold unknown except by name on metal identification check found in his pocket mrs sadie smith unidentified man and woman both at the montana undertaking rooms THE INJURED teresa kottke back hurt not seriously injured john harvey right knee fractured harry L landley rooms at goldberg block cut on the face joseph kennedy contusion on the back tencle brudes slight bruise on tight arm and contusion on right leg albert dockstader suffering from shock and some contusions extent of injuries uncertain agnes sullivan bast galena street suffering from shock and slight contusions gertie shay west quartz leg perhaps internal injuries james cairns leg broken ft phelix hughes fractured knee and bodily injuries alfred jackson 15 south delaware jno torman broken leg and wounds possibly internal injuries spokane laborer leg broken loaded with passengers many of them women and girls street car no 11 returning from columbia gardens was struck by the end of a freight train on the railroad tracks north of the butte anaconda pacific depot and crushed beneath the weight of one freight car killing eight and fatally injuring one and perhaps another numerous others were slightly hurt and were taken to their homes tor treatment their names at this time being unobtainable the tragedy was one of the most horrible in the history of butte and the most serious ever experienced by the street railway company that more were not killed Is a mystery for the accident occurred with an appalling suddenness that precluded any hope of escape tor those on the front end of the car most of them were women and young girls and six of these were killed the other two victims being men protruding from beneath the bottom of the mass of twisted and broken timbers were the feet and lower limbs of several of the victims the limbs wre badly crushed and the feet of a woman were almost completely severed just above the ankles her agonizing screams could be faintly heard but as the remainder of the body was obscured from view it was impossible to identity the victim the band of a man extended from beneath the pile of debris and was severed from the body just above the wrist the man had evidently been crawling from beneath the car when it fell back and pinned him ta the ground the train which struck the street car was composed of fourteen freight care being pushed east on the tracks W a B A P engine in charge of Engineer logan and fireman fred the train was in charge Conductor of hoagland it Is not understood der stood that the train was going at a very fast rate of speed for the crossing is a dangerous one the street car was approaching from the south and there are conflicting stories as to whether it made the usual crossing stop although it is t believed it did hoagland says he was on top of the train with a lantern and warned the motorman but the latter put on speed and attempted to cross ahead of the train when the freight struck the car the ach was terrific and as the splinter timbers showered in all directions managuing mana gUng and tearing the flesh of those on the trolley they were cover edwith the blood of the killed and injured sickening pools of red formed onabe spot and trickled in a ghastly stream from beneath the wreckage passengers of both sexes were thrown from the car by the impact andio this tact many owe their lives others only a few saw the danger andi jumped but the unfortunates on s the front seats were overwhelmed and crushed to death women became hysterical men sick and faint as they emerged from dazed condition and realized the extent ot the tragedy strong men wept like children while women had to be assisted from the scene |
