Show LEADS IN EDUCATION A AMERICA SHOULD FOLLOW HER EXAMPLE new york jan 5 james C monaghan united states consul at chemnitz germany was the principal speaker at a dinner of the arkwright club last night ho said the man who has done most for humanity is the one that has exchanged the products of one country for those of another the wise statesman is the one who stands by agriculture commerce and manufactures this tho german statesmen have done but I 1 would first speak of my own country before I 1 take up what germany has done we lead as the most productive country in the world from to 1876 we imported worth of goods more than we exported between the years 1876 and 1897 our exports were more than 1 in excess of our imports our exports of manufactured goods have risen from less than annually to more than before the discovery of coal spain and portugal led all the warl 1 in commerce tho world tomorrow is tor the countries with coal iron and lime those countries arc england belgium germany russia and the united states but we lead all by more than a thousand per cent by every law of matuie the future belongs to our country there is but one way by which we can lose our advantage that is by falling behind in education the best educational system from an agricultural and industrial standpoint Is to be found in germany I 1 would not be true to my country if after studying the subject I 1 did not say this I 1 do not mean that we should adopt exactly the german system for it discriminates crimi nates in schools for the middle low and higher classes as we must never do but I 1 must say for the german educational system that it has accomplished complis hed the greatest good tor a scientific system of agriculture and manufactures fac tures germany imports bales of raw cotton yearly and returns it to us in the form of laces and other cotton goods germany increased its exports of manufactured goods last year by english exports fell off and ours were increased by we have cause tor congratulation but you must remember that we have natural resources unknown in any other part of the world we must think not about what we have done without adequate industrial schools but what we might have done them let us adopt a system somewhat similar to that ot germany and our country will be infinitely greater than it is 1 I advocated five years ago an alliance between germany england and this country I 1 advocate this alliance again I 1 want to say gentlemen that a wealth beyond dreams not only in material things but in intellect and spirit would follow let the world be against us with such an alliance and the republic has nothing to fear |
