Show SMALLPOX IN THE WEST ogden must take precautions against the plague As a railroad and business amter this city must look out that the disease does not get a foothold here ogden city is situated in a peculiar manner as to the probabilities 0 contagious diseases obtaining a foothold in cpr midst this is the railroad centor of the west people traveling must come to ogden when they wish to go in almost any direction and there are passing through the city daily thousands of people from all over the the union pacific from the east the southern pacific from the west the rio grande from the east and south the oregon short line from the north south and west all are dumping passengers into this city and the union depot is crowded with transients before and after the arrival and departure ot any and all trains to tha north and south of ogden there aro cases oi smallpox in salt lake there a dozen cases nearly all developed within this week and there is no question but that the isolating of the cases has come too late to prevent a further spread of the contagion at butte there aro perhaps near a hundred cases and they too are hard to keep under control it is difficult to isolate cases of this disease because there is an inherent horror at sending any friend or relative to the although there is as a general thing as good or better accommodations for the diseased patient than home however that may at their own be the delay in reporting these cases and this horror of the is the dangerous part of the condition which confronts this city as well as thoa where thero are already a number ot cases of tho disease tho railway travel from the north and tho south la liable at any time to bring into this city some of those who have been exposed to the disease and whether they do or do not become victims to it thero is always danger of their carrying it to agomo who are more susceptible to contagion and como of the citizens of this city may contract it and never know choro they did risk exposure the travel to and from salt lake is especially large every day there aro numbers of ogden people who go to salt lake some for a few hours and others for days and they should exercise all the care possible to prevent themselves from being exposed to the disease from tho north butte there is not bo much travel and fewer people slop at ogden from this diorec ion than aiom the south but the danger still remains and every precaution should be taken to prevent the aiom reaching ogden there has been today considerable talk of establishing a quarantine against the capital city at least for a short time thero is good reason for this action the manner in which the cases in salt lako have come to the knowledge of the city authorities is ground tor the suspicion that there are many who have been exposed who have not been apprehended the cases known there today ere found by accident and si of them were found in the family of a peddler under conditions which show that is no manner of learning how many of salt lakes citizens have been exposed they were taken to the but after they had been for more than twenty four hours ogden people should be careful there is being every effort mado iby the city authorities to prepare for the plague in case it should break out here but these precautions will avail them naught if the citizens do not also use every precaution to aid them in their efforts to protect the cites health some action will undoubtedly be taken regarding the matter at tha next meeting of the city council as mayor browning has been looking closely into the matter and among other bilings has discovered that the city has no it tho disease should I 1 break out here there will of necessity be a built because the old one has been leased for an indefinite term of years and cannot now be readily fitted up for business all danger or nearly all danger can be forestalled by the timely actions of the citizens in taking good cara of themselves and of their city some few days ago the state school for the deaf and blind began their crusade against the disease by sending out a letter signed by bupt supt metcalf to the effect that no packages or letters would be received by the institution when coming from an infected district this action was made imperative ibe causo a number of the students in the institution have relatives living in or near the infected districts some in san pete county some in salt lake county and somo in devler county in salt lako the cases discovered yesterday arc in the near vicinity of the home of bome of the students of the school and they are protecting themselves in the safest manner the danger of the disease lies in carelessness and a lack of precaution and the people of a city have it in their power to obviate the necessity of com batting the disease as a plague by preparing their defenses before tho war is on |
