Show railroaders GETTING UNEASY brotherhood OF RAILROAD TRAINMEN HAVE A GRIEVANCE chicago jan 5 A special to the tribune from cleveland ohio says the brotherhood of railroad trainmen has given notice of withdrawal from the federation of american railway employed Emp loyes the withdrawal of the trainmen it Is said will disband the federation as other organizations have grievances which they have been unable to settle with roads because of the failure of the federation to unanimously sanction strikes as is bequir all by the rules of the order it is declared ane firemen and telegraphers grap hers have grievances in the east which are serious and that there may be a general disturbance as a result of the withdrawals which are effective january 16 the executive officers held a meeting in chicago january 3 at which this course was made necessary by a disagreement the american federation is composed of the following organizations the order of railway conductors tho brotherhood of locomotive firemen the order of railroad telegraphers Telegraph era and the brotherhood of railroad trainmen it Is stated that another federation will be formed composed of three of the organizations which have acted in alliance and along progressive lines it is said the action taken at chicago will cause a stir among railroad men throughout america A reminiscence A reminder of the awful wreck on the 0 R N in oregon on the of november last came to ogden yesterday to dr shields the son in law ot hon james N kemball dr shields was the only physician on the train and the souvenir that came to him was an annual pass over the road and a voucher for 80 these were accompanied by a letter from the superintendent stating that the injured brakeman who was caught under the wreck would live the brakeman had his jaw bone broken his left arm broken in two places his hip bone chipped his thigh bone broken and the ankle bone smashed to splinters besides this he lay tor five hours under some six feet of loose earth while the men worked to extricate him the cause of the wreck was a boulder washed down on to the track the night was dark and the rain fell in bucketfuls the engine when it jumped the track went down an embankment about forty feet but fortunately left the cars on the grade derailing only three of them BOOM IN SHEEP RAISING there is no branch of the livestock live stock industry making such rapid gains ai the sheep business according to the chicago drovers journal all kinds of people out west are investing in sheep hoping that the present gool condition will keep up people arc naturally attracted to any business that 1 making money regardless ot whether they know anything about it or not at the present rate of growth it looks as it the thing might be overdone as it has been in the past and that those who are looking tor profit and experience might at least get all of the latter they want sheep are prolific and soon reach maturity and with a good demand tor both wool and mutton there Is a possibility of overstock ing the demand there is no better business than the sheep business for one who understands it and there I 1 none that is fuller of pitfalls tor the novice like any other business one should learn more about it than can be gotten from books before branching out too boldly FREIGHT STEAMERS DISABLED washington jan 3 in answer to a cable inquiry as to the whereabouts of the freight steamer victoria which had not been heard from since her departure from san francisco oct 16 quartermaster general ludington today received a cable message from col miller quartermaster at manila as 1 lows victoria with broken shaft left guam tor manila dec 25 towed by collier brutus |
