Show YALE improvements TO BE MADE IN TEACHING chicago jan 4 by the time of the yale centennial bicentennial bi in 1901 I 1 believe we shall see such a reform in the teaching work of the university as will bring all the undergraduate departments into harmony and adopt the college work both to the schools below it and to the world life after it I 1 believe that there will bo a progress in the courses of study which shall make the result of the education they give the advance of the student really and not only toward citizenship zen ship but toward the particular kind of citizenship which he needs to exercise aliis was the way president arthur T II adley of yale university char the present lines of development in his institution in an speech which he made last evening at the dinner given in honor of the chicago yale association at the university club mr haciey bad spoken regretfully of seme features of the educational work of yale in the past 1 I regret he said that progress la matters of instruction st has not been what it should have been there is a lack of progress of ordination coordination co and of the oi i the studies to the conditions of american life there isia strong feeling now that the faculties must use brains ia the reforms of the courses ot instruction and put the work into coherence with itself and with outside alto then ahe made the pre dicon which has and continued 1 I doinog have great t sympathy with the view that the college course should be a preparation of students tor the professional or business life I 1 hold rather that it should operate cooperate co with the store and office life that is to follow and teach those things which would not be learned in the store or office so as to make a man big enough to see things outside his professional nil I 1 would have it give the graduate ii larger knowledge of life so when the chance tor progress comes lie will be the man to take the lead in it mr hadley spoke also of some of the material improvements which yale Is aiming at for the celebration of the anniversary of ita foundation january his present trip which includes many of the largest cities of the west la made largely with the view of stirring up yale loyalty to aid in the work and be gave many expressions of bis appreciation to the alumni for the interest they bad shown in their alma mater he told of the new buildings which are to ba elected as soon aa the funds are ready including an auditorium a memorial vestibule a dining hall and administration buildings then speaking of the finances bo eald if at the end of the century and a halt of history could batse from ita alumni a memorial fund ot I 1 figure that yale at the end of two centuries can raise |
