Show WHAT A WOMAN CAN DO. There is a woman in the northeast part of the city who, as a diversion, is cultivating a small patch of ground. She keeps the family in vegetables on a piece of land that were it in some othpu person's back yard might be j'ielding nothing but weeds. This woman has had sweet corn and tomatoes from her garden, in addition to all the other vegetables, such as lettuce, onions, radishes, rad-ishes, cucumbers and peas. For years, prior to the building of her home on the corner lot, the land served no more useful purpose than hundreds of other va cant lots in this city, and this leads us to ask why there should bo so much idle land within the boundaries of this city after this demonstration dem-onstration of what one woman can accomplish. W offer a suggestion. The city schools teach plant life and pretend to study agriculture. "Why not enlarge upon this department depart-ment of education by placing thi3 woman, if she will accept the task in control of the children who desire to get closo to nature and, turning the waste area in the city over to her, make possible the cultivating of dozens of garden spots. Have the land plowed and the seeds purchased at public expense, and then give the word that will turn the weed patches into beautiful gardens of corn and onions and potatoes, Land with water outside the city is worth from $200 to $1,000. Trucksters value their land at $1,000. But similar land within the city is worse than worthless because given over to noxious weeds. .IWJjynbt'ch'angotliiSj'if-forTno other purpose .than to raise garden BBBSmi n '"fan ibmI ' m stuff for the poor and to wipe out the spots which are blemishes upon the city? If Ogden had one hundred women boosters of the energy and ability of the woman who has this garden of plenty in her backyard, that would provo the biggest boost of all. One hundred such gardeners gard-eners beautifying their homes would spread Ogden 's fame as a city of homes and a place ojE, contentment where nature has doubly blessed the people. |
