Show IMMENSE CROWD SEES GOULLET BEAT CLARKE Salt Lake, Aug. 5 Aftor having postponed three straight meets at tho Salt Palace saucer track tho fans had grown anxious to see some racing and the crowd filled tho bleachers and overflowed into the pit in swarms. The card was better than some of the recent ones have been and all of the loafing that marred the last meet was eliminated The star of tlio evening as ubual was Alf Goullet, who took tho match race from Jackie Clarke in straight heats with little difficulty and then won the mile open professional in a whirlwind finish that made the spectators spec-tators rise to their feet with shouts of approval The match race between Clarke and Goullet was three heats of one mile each with two pace makers one making mak-ing paco for the first three laps and the other for the second three laps and the other for the second three while there was no pace for tho last two laps In the first heat Goullet took the lead at tho start and hold it until the paco makers quit the raco. Clarko thon sprinted and passed the little "bullet" Ho hold tho lead for only an instant however, for Goullot unwound a killing sprint and paBaed him in tho laBt fifty yards winning by almost a.wheol length. In tho second heat Goullet also toolc tho lead, but In this race Clarko was unable to go around him after the pace makers dropped out and Clarke finished over a wheel length behind. oo |
