Show VOTE TODAY IN OAKLAND Officials May Be Recalled Re-called For Suppressing Suppress-ing Free Speech Oakland, Cal., Au. 5 For the half hour between 6 and G:30 this morning, all the factory and water front whistles whis-tles of Oakland summoned the citizens to the polls. During the day they voted on whether Mayor Frank K. Mott and Commissioner F. C. Turner and W. J. Basscus are to be recalled or retained in office. The polls opened at C a. m., to be closed at 6 pm. From G until 6:30, continuously, between 7 and 7:30 for ten minutes, at noon for ten minute3, and again for half an hour, continuously, contin-uously, between 5 and 5:30, the whistles whis-tles were ordered to blare and bellow. The ballot contains printed statements state-ments on which the recall Is based, and the answers thereto of the officers offi-cers affected. In substance the complaints com-plaints against the mayor and his commissioners are identical. They recite re-cite that the police unlawfully invaded a public meeting last March, thereby violating the constitutional right to peaceable assembly: that the police have since been used for the suppression suppres-sion of free speech and that the mayor and his commissioners violated the provisions of the new charter by granting certain leases of water front lands and certain municipal franchises franchis-es before the charter went into effect The Industrial Workers of the World, who in recent months have been conspicuous con-spicuous in disturbances at San Diego, Die-go, Cal., Seattle, Wash., and Lawrence. Law-rence. Mass , have boon active in circulating cir-culating recall petitions, and are charged by Commissioner Turner of being behind the whole movement. In addition to the general charges brought against the mayor, Commissioner Commis-sioner Turner Is charged with continuing con-tinuing the third degree the unsanitary unsani-tary condition of the city jail, and maintaining the chain gang. Ho replies In part: "The city Jail Is not unsanitary, although al-though It Is an unattractive residence for the lawless." Mayor Mott's reply is that he did not order the police to invade the meeting specified; as to tho franchises fran-chises and leases, "all matters therein Involved were long slnec approved by the people .in several votes of confidence confi-dence after months of deliberation and with full understanding."
