Show 'CONCESSIONS TO LIGHT COMPANY Representaties of the Merchants' Light and Power company of Ogden met yestorday with the Salt Lake city commissioners to determine upon the rato of license tax which the concern Is to pay Salt Lake City in consideration considera-tion of tho franchise recently granted grant-ed it for furnishing electric lisht and power to Salt Lnko consumers Modification was made of the provision pro-vision renuirlnc: the navmeni of per centages on tho gross income of the company. Objection was made by the promoters of the company to the payment of what they considered nn excessive per cent In view of the fact that they had such keen competition in the city, and especially since the franchiso granted tho competing company com-pany was so much more liberal in its provisions. Agreement was reached that the .company should pay nothing for the first rive years, one half of 1 per cent for the next twenty years nnd 1 per cent for the last twenty-five years. The former provision required the payment of one hnif of 1 per cent for the first five years. 1 1-2 per cent for the next twenty years and 2 per cent for the last twenty-flvo years. The Income tax will be paid, however, how-ever, on the lighting sstem only No revenue will be collected by the city on the gross income obtained from the sale of power It was explained by the icpre3cntatives of the company com-pany that tho competition was so keen on power that they could not hope to exist In the field had they to pay an Income tax to the city. The commissioners also promised the representatives of the company that the lighting contract for Salt Lake City lights would be advertised, and that it would be awarded to the lowest bidder Tho promise was secured se-cured on the representation that the new concern wishes to prepare Its plans to compete with tho Utah Light and Railway company, which now furnishes the lights. |
