Show Mo GOWANS IS TEE FIRST SPEAKER The first meeting of tho Sunday Night club, which was held in the Guild hall of the Church of the Good Shepherd last night, was largoly attended. at-tended. Dr E. G. Gowans of the Stato Industrial school was the speaker, his subject being "Some of the CauBes of Juvenile Delinquency." Dr. Gowans began'his remarks with a commendation of tho purpose of the club, saying that it was a splendid evidence evi-dence of an awakening of the social consoieuce, and that he was certain such a movement would be of great value to the community in helping it t solve some of its social problems. Dr. Gowans emphasized the fact that there was ?Teat need for those preventive pre-ventive measures that would eventually eventu-ally put the Industrial school "out of buBlness," by removing the cause of delinquency. Nearly 90 per cent of tho Inmates of the institution, he said, came from unsatisfactory homos." An "unsatisfactory home" was usually one where the wife, through the death or desertion of the husband, was obliged not only to make the homo, but to make the living as well. Statistics showed that out of 200 chlldron committed com-mitted to the school, 115 came from such homos. The stato could well afford to furnish relief In such cases, so that tho mother could devote her time to the care of tho children. This has been successfully done in Kansas City, Mo.
