Great Importance 6,000 Children Expected j Ji - to Be in Line. x Final arrangements are being made for the celebration of Flag day, Fri- day, June 1-1, and members of DIx-J-ogan post, G. A. R., state that probably prob-ably 6,000 school children and others vrill participate In the exercises of tho day. Not only has an eastern moving picture firm mado application for the privilege of photographing the various features of the Flag day program, but : a similar concern of Salt Lake has f communicated with the local commit tee, asking that it also be allowed to take a series of films. At a meeting of the -various G. A. R. committees last evening at the City hall, a resolution was passed modify-' modify-' i ing the plans by means of which K "money was to be raised for purchasing purchas-ing the Bilk marching flags for the public schools. As details of f the movement became known, how- , ever, communications were received asking that the raising of this found ', bo made general so that a great num- ber might assist In a small way in ad- yj ditlon to those who choose to con- v0 tribute the large amounts. It was therefore decided to circulate a gen- eral subscription list among merchants Y' and private Individuals of the city y. The veterans also drew a statement for publication setting forth the local history of the Flag day celebration and the presentation of the flags to r the cltj schools. The statement is as follows. "The time is not far distant when the defense of our national flag and the upholding of the principals for which it stands must devolve entirely upon those who are the school children chil-dren of today and none too soon can there be Instilled into their hearts and minds the twin principles of patriotism; pa-triotism; love of flag, love of country Sentiments, such as these, properly engendered, make a nation of a people peo-ple and a bulwark against all oppression. oppres-sion. "Two weeks ago, 7,000 button badges bearing the national emblem and an inscription in commemoration of Flag day, weie purchased by tho local -veterans and at the close of school these were distributed to the children with the understanding that they were to wear the same in participating par-ticipating in the Flag day program. At the same time twelve large sl'k flags were ordered for the presentation presenta-tion ceremony. These have now arrived ar-rived and all is in readiness for the circulation of the subscription list to defray the expense incurred. Through special arrangements with a local merchant, the flags were obtained at actual cost." |
