Show THIRTY DAYS IN CITY JAIL r- J. R. Morris was arraigned before Judge Recdor in police court this morning, charged with assault aim battery committed on the person of H. B. Oratt early yesterday morning in tho local railroad yards. Gratt, when placed on the stand, testified that ho Is the foreman of a switching crow and early yesterday morning was switching a dining car with hie crow, of which Slorrls wbb a member, whon some ono gave the signal sig-nal to go ahead, before tho steam node had beon disconnected. Gratt says Morris gavo the go-ahead signal and when ho asked him why be had given it he replied that ho thought thoy woro ready. Gratt also said he told Morris to uncouplo tho hose, which Morris says he did not hear. Gratt says some words followed and, before be-fore ho had time to realize what was about to happen, Morris stmck him over the head with his lantern. Morris took the stand after two witnesses wit-nesses had corroborated Gratt's story and said ho struck Gratt la self-defense as Gratt was about to strike him with a lantern, and he merely hit him first. He also said Gratt cursed him and fired him for neglecting neglect-ing to do something Gratt did not toll him to do. As Morris had no witnesses and the other sldo had two, the court felt bound to take the preponderance of the testimony and so found Morri3 guilty. He recelvod a fine of $30 or thirty days In jail. When seen 'after the trial Morris said he had decided to serve out his sentence despite the fact that friends wero on hand who offered to pay hiB fine. |
