Show Commissioner Josoph C. Nye undertook under-took to be facetious last evening when the board was called to order by Mayor Foil by stating that tho "Standard "Stand-ard ox-offlclo member, Sam Browning, hod not yet arrived." He was corrected cor-rected to say "Tom Browning." Tho mayor announced that what might have been printed In the newspapers was not of any concern to the city board of commissioners, and, with a wavo of tho hand, directed that tho business of tho board bo taken up. The fact of the matter Is that tho statement that Chief Browning was to be glvon the position, of Inspector of all the city departments and to be, considered In tho light of "ox-oniclo" member of tho board of commissioners, commission-ers, was publlflhed first In tho morning morn-ing papers, and the evening papers only reltoratod what they said. Commissioner Com-missioner Nye, however, considered that It was a grave Insult to tho hoard. Tho other mombors of the board paid no attention to tho speculation specu-lation indulged in by tho mornJng papers. The Appointmento. Tho resignation of Chief Browning waa accopted by tho board to tako effect ef-fect February 6, and, on motion of Superintendent T. Samuel Browning of tho department of public safoty, William 1. Norton was appointed to fill tho vacancy, his term of office to begin February 5. Othor appointments appoint-ments wro mado as follows: A. B. It was roportod by the board ot equalization that thoro wero no protests pro-tests ngalnst tho establishment of sewer district No. 12, and also that there bad been no protoata against the opening of Twenty-ninth street, between Washington and Qulncy avenues, av-enues, it was ordered that the assessments as-sessments for the improvements be approved. On the recommendation of Commissioner Com-missioner Nyo. J. B. Keller was allowed al-lowed ?20 for tho care of tho Lynn canal on Lincoln avenue. It was also recommended by Mr. Nyo tha W. S.
