Show PORT ARTHUR IS TO BE ABANDONED "Washington, Sept. 12. Purely strat eglcal reasons have Induced the Japanese Jap-anese government to decide upon tho abandonment of a naval station at Port Arthur. In Manchuria, represent ing an investment of many millions of dollars. This station was built by the Russians when, they were In control con-trol of the Liao Tung peninsula, un dor nominal lease from China, and, after it wa6 shown to fall of that degree de-gree of impregnability which was tho object of Its founders, and fell Into the hands of the Japanese as an Incident In-cident to the Ttusso-JnpaneBe war, the victors did not hesitate to spend another an-other great su raof money upon the defenses. But the acquisition of Korea by Japan has made the Port Arthur station sta-tion secondary in Importance from a naval point of view It was too far Inland to be of nny use in the defense de-fense of Korea so it has beon decided to abandon It and transfer as much material as can be used elsewhere to the new site selected at Chlnhal bay on the coast of Korea, a position that will command tho ntrancc to the Yellow Sea and the great gulf of Pcchlll, as well as afford a measure of protection to the western coast of Japan and tho straits of Korea, Great dorks will be built at this place, which will be used exclusively for naval purposes The port will be closed to commerce, while Port Arthur Ar-thur will be released for tho use of the merchant marine |
