Seven masked men held up Rock Island passenger pas-senger train No. 43 near Hulbert, Ark., early this morning, dynamiting the safe lu the express car, but it Is believed they secured only a small amount of loot. Onlv meager reportB had been received from the holdup, which is several miles from the nearest near-est point of communication with Memphis, Mem-phis, at 3 o'clock It was stated at tho offices of tho railroad, however, that the Information Is that the men were frightened away before they could get their plunder. Rock Island passenger train No. 43. westbound, west-bound, was hold up by masked men at the western terminus of the railroad rail-road bridge which crosses the Mississippi Mis-sissippi river at Memphis, early this morning and It Is reported the safe In the express car was dynamited and robbed. Tho train left Memphis shortly after af-ter midnight and crossed tho bridge an hour later Immediately after the tialn cleared the bridge It was stopped stop-ped and within a few minutes a fusillade fusil-lade of shots was heard, followed by Beveral blasts of an explosive. Efforts to communlcato with the Arkansas side of tho river failed, all of tho wires having been put out of commission, com-mission, supposedly by the bandits. A switch tender somo distance from the scene reported the train ha.l been hold up but beyond this fact he could give no details. A switch engine with a posse aboard was Gtarted for tho scene shortly bo-fore bo-fore 2 o'clock. LITTLE ROCK. Ark., Feb 7. A report re-port to Superintendent A. V. Coploy of tho Rock Island this morning says that the only thing of value which the robbers got was one pouch of registered mall, Tho Rock Island chief special agent with a posse left Little Rock at 2 o'clock this morning on Rock Island train No. 4 for the scene of tho robbery, rob-bery, after having telegraphed to Palestine, Ark., near Hurlburt, for bloodhounds. A message here says the dogs were not available this morning. Special Agent Cleary was a passenger passen-ger on train No. 43 whon It was held up on tho last day of Novembor at exactly tho same spot where the robbery rob-bery of this morning took place. A report to the Gazette at 2:40 a. m. says a posse from a Memphis detective detec-tive agency, which has Just crossed the bridge on a switch engine, saw the robbors, who took to tho brush, going in the direction of the Missls-sipl Missls-sipl river. The posse Is still In pursuit pur-suit of them. |
