Show B SHADY BEND UNDER AN ALIAS. Wt Disgrace hangs heavy over the village of Shady Bend in KTan- B( sas. The place has gained so much shameful and scandalous notor- H: iety by reason of the infamous "tar party" conducted by three of H its prominent citizens that the people of the neighborhood are seri- HH , ously considering changing its name, says the San Francisco Call. Hu It seems a natural aspiration, notwithstanding certain obvious dis- H 1 advantages of an alias. The abrupt adoption of a geographical H j disguise may involve a lot of explanations that sometimes leave (he Hj Jast state worse than the first. H j The ill fame of Shady Bond is perhaps well deserved. A com- Hm munity where leading and wealthy citizens could engage in a ccfa- HT spiracy to do monstrous outrage on a defenseless woman must have H 1 something wrong in its makeup. One would scarcely expect to B- find such evidences of degeneracy in a country village, and in a Hl wnall place things of that sort do not occur without some tolera- H' tion of community sentiment. H But it becomes evident that by this time Shady Bend has come R to realize its unenviable reputation. |
