Show TtfTCVETO Wool Bill Is. Not 'in Harmony With His Platform ' Washington, Aug. 17- President Taft today carried out his threat to veto tho wool tariff bill. In a speclal message to tho house of represent-" atives, ho characterized the measure a blond of an avowed tariff-for-rev-enuo and antl-protoctlon measure with a professed protection bill. In explanation of his course, President Pres-ident Taft said the bill was not in harmony with the platform on which he was elected. Furthermore, ho declared de-clared that the American people are deeply impressed with the conviction that the Interests of the consuming publlo can be properly guarded only by revising the tariff one schedule at a time, and then on "accurato and scientifically acquired Information," After promising that the tariff board will be ready to report In December, De-cember, tho President argued that failure of tho present bill should not be regarded, therefore, as taking away the only chance for reduction by this congress. The message will bo accepted as an Indication that no bill on tariff, prepared pre-pared In advance of the tariff board report, will be signed by tho president |
