Show COAL MINERS WILL -DEMANDINCREASE INDIANAPOLIS, lnd., Jan. 24. Demands, De-mands, for wage Increases of 10 cents a ton for bituminous coal and 20 per cent for anthracite coal, wore endorsed en-dorsed today by tho convention of tho United Mine Workers of America. Representatives of the bituminous miners will presont their proposed wage contract to tho operators of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Western Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania and West Vlrglna tomorrow. Tho joint conference of tho anthracite anthra-cite miners and operators will be hold Feb. 27. Contracts in both tho hard and soft coal fields expire March 31. The principal provisions of tho draft of a now contract for the bituminous bitum-inous miners submitted to the convention con-vention today by its scalp committee were approved without change. They arc; Flat 10 cents a ton increase in wage for pick and machine mined coal, run-of-mlne basis. Twenty per cent Increase In-crease for day labor. Working day of seven hours (at the working place). Five hours to constitute work-day on Sunday. Wage contract for period of two years, beginning April 1, 1912. The miners convention will not adjourn ad-journ until a decision has beeu reach ed by the Joint conference. The convention con-vention deferred consideration of policies pol-icies in Tegard to the enforcing of tho miners' demands should they be rejected. |
