"Owing to the mental condition of William Schmidt, the fact that ho did not have onough money to take him very far from Salt Lake City, and owing to the further fact that our dragnet is far reaching and covers all tho surrounding towns and cities, I reel certain that tho murderer of Mrs Marcla S. Groff, who was strangled Saturday night, will bo captured within with-in a short time." Statement made today By Captain of Detectives Riley M. Beckstead. Last night Mayor Park authorized Chief ot Polic Grant to offer a ro-ward ro-ward of $200 for the arrest and conviction con-viction of Mrs. Grotf's murderer. Sheriff Joseph C. Sharp notified all of his deputies and near-by towns were searched. Descriptions have ul-uu aeiiL oroaacast but unfortunately the authorities were unable to find a photograph of Schmidt, Lost evening Detective Ed Janney was sent to make a search of Bingham Bing-ham as the police had been informed that Schmidt left Salt Lake Monday afternoon and had announced his Intention In-tention of going to Bingham. Detective Janney worked all night at Bingham, the officers there assisting assist-ing him in the search. Murray was also searched as with a fine tooth comb, but so far no trace of the man has becn revealed. |
