The killing of Patten caused no little lit-tle sensation at the time Is occurred, showing as It did, disregard for the Baloon closing law and the general inefficiency in-efficiency of tho police protection of Salt Lake Rushing from the place of the shooting, Jeffry ran into tho arms of a patrolman at the corner of Third South and Main streets and alarming tho officer with tho declaration that' he had best hurry to tho Heidelberg, as there had been some trouble there, the policeman promptly turned Patt ten's slayer loose and rushed to the saloon After his release Jeffry walked calmly to the Bank saloon, where he purchased a flask of whlskv and from there proceeded west on Second South being again taken In bv an officer at the corner of Second South and West Temple Ho feigned drunk at this time and upon the solicitation of tho woman who was the cailse of the trouble and who met him at this point, he was again released and placed hi a cab Following the (tragedy, emphatic orders or-ders issued fron the office of Chief of Police Barlow that all saloons comply com-ply with tho closing law Previous to this occurrence, this law had been wholly ignorod. oo |
