Show LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY. Members of the local Grand Army, in calling attention to the observance of Lincoln's birthday, havo set forth the following tribute to Lincoln: "It is proper that all men, having a fellow feeling for humanity should, for a short time, drop the affairs of business and social life and join in a proper commemoration of the greatest benefactor of modern times, a man whose heart, with enmity toward none, welled with love and sympathy toward all and who grasped the opportunity oppor-tunity to serve all mankind. In breaking the chains of 4,000,000 bondsmen, he made our declaration, that 'All men are born equal', a living principle and set an example which will eventually make it the world's motto. "Washington wag the 'father of his country,' but since we first sang, 'We are coming, Father Abraham, 600,000 strong,' Lincoln Lin-coln has been the father of the Civil War soldier. Nest to the old1 flag, we love the man who, though calling hundreds of thousands of men to risk or give their lives for their country's sake, would gladly have laid his own life on the altar, could that have saved' the sacrifice of others. "Born on the border between the North and South, both sections sec-tions were his country. While an institution, repugnant to every moral instinct of his nature, seemed destined to divide them, it was his mission to stand at the breach for four years amid the fearful carnage that claimed the life blood of half a million heroes. When the tide had turned and victory for the right was assured, his blood was mingled with theirs in consecration of the grand principle, 'All men are born free and equal. "Shafts, mausoleums, arches and 'Appian Ways' may serve to appropriately commemorate the Nelsons, Grants, Napoleons and Roman heroes great generals all but the most enduring monument monu-ment to Lincoln is a construction without hands. Time cannot tarnish tarn-ish it, vandals cannot desecrate, nor even earthshocks overthrow this monument of memory, born and bred in the hearts and con-sciences con-sciences of all men." |
