Show IRLD'SJMETS UNION PACIFIC ADVANCES ON FAVORABLE REPORT Now York, Aug, 8. Some very striking gains wore registered at tho oponing of the stock market. St. Paul advanced 2 1-2, Northern Pacific Pa-cific 2; Great Northern 1 3-4, Southern South-ern Pacific 1 1-2; Union Paciric 1 3-8; with gains of a point or more in Reading, Read-ing, Lehigh Valley, Canadian Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Rockland preferred, and United States Steel, Opening gains'were soon increased, Union Pacific advancing 2 1-2 points over last nJght's close. That stock was the barometer of the list because of the reassuring statement issued by tho management yesterday. It was noticeable, however, that the ac-tlvlty ac-tlvlty which accompanied tho rise was in scant proportions to that which attended the recent declines. Pj-Icea shaded some from the top. due perhaps, per-haps, to profit taking, but the tone continued strong. Advances held quite generally during dur-ing tho early session, subject to small short recessions as the short lnter-et lnter-et manifested a renewal of activity. The Union Pacific tatemont was undoubtedly a factor In checking the decline. So far as could bo seen, however. It was not productive of any considerable 'amount of investment buying. United States Steel was of-ferod of-ferod for salo on every advance, but this fact was associated with tho proposed pro-posed tariff revision in tho steel In- uuaury me enseal railway situation situa-tion in England as reflected by some selling from London. The one feature fea-ture of tho bond list was a two-point decline in American Tobacco" fours; Aside from tho fact thatprice3 con tinued to hold, the market was featureless fea-tureless at mlddaj-. Trading fell to minor proportions an neighter side seemed disposed to make a move. OGDEN WHOLESALE PRODUCE" fSelling Price ) Ogden, Utah. Aug. 18.
