Show 0-E HOUSE OF MAfilC AT The magician's hand is quikcer than the eye, but not so quick as the hand of electricity which performs the "magic" for General Electric's "House of Magic,' an amazing scientific show which will be presented free of charge in the Smithfield Junior high school auditorium Wednesday evening, ev-ening, December 10 at 8 p.m. The Utah Power & Light company com-pany is sponsoring tins fantastic demonstration of science, admission admis-sion to which is free. Dr. Hylon T. Plumb, known in principal cities of the United States and Canada as a lecturer who makes complicated scientific phenomena understandable to the layman, will serve in the capac-1 ity of the "magician" rmd pre-1 s?nt the 'show. In real life he is an engineering consultant for the General Electric company at Salt Lake City. Dr. Plumb squeezes light out of a gas-filled tube with his hands and lights an incandescent lamp with a match as well as with electric current flowing through his arms. He demonstrates demon-strates humidity control by turning a light on with a mois: : breath and off with a cry brcr.th. ! The "House of Magic" will ! irr.-itn'e the light, of a firefly j with chemicals. It is a cold light. I but the cost of producing it is some 25 million times that of the electric lamp. The demonstration, acrording to Dr. Plumb, is 'intended to suggest sug-gest some of the changes which are in store for future generations genera-tions as a result of laboratory research. In this fanciful presentation of fact the eye is fascinated by brilliant colors leaping out with the ultraviolet while music travels trav-els across the stage on a beam of light. Dr. Plumb causes a shadow to stand still after its owner wralks awray. The lecturer, affectionately known as "High Tension" Plumb by students when he was a college col-lege professor, will demonstrate stroboscope light, which flashes on and off too quickly for the eye to detect By its use a disk revolving 900 rimes a minute min-ute is made to appear to stand still. j A "kidnap detector'' will be demonstrated by utilizing capacity control of electric current. Whenever When-ever a body draws near the baby a detector causes a bell to ring. It is impossible to touch the baby without rinnir.g the j bell. A New York newspaper das- 'cribed the show as "the most incredible and awe-inspiring feature fea-ture of the fair." |
