Scalley, vice president and general manager of the Utah-Idaho Sugar company at a meeting of 65 company officials offi-cials and brokerage firm representatives represen-tatives Tuesday in the Hotel Utah. Mr. Scalley pointed out that under un-der present acreage restrictions his company will produce from 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 bags of sugar su-gar from this year's crop, if the season is favorable, compared with a normal production of from 3,500,000 to 4,000,000 bags. The present law which will expire ex-pire soon unless extended by congress, con-gress, drescribes a production of 1,554,000 tons of sugar by the domestic do-mestic sugar beet industry. Expansion Expan-sion of this allotment to 1,750,000 tons is being sought. , Other speakers were D. W. Lowe, assistant sales manager; Harold W. Ansell, traffic manager, mana-ger, and David W. Evans, advertising adver-tising counselor. Mr. Lowe said sugar consumption consump-tion demands in western states are sufficient to absorb all beet sugar produced in the western area. ''At present," he said, "some western sugar is shipped to other states and sugar from some other areas is shipped into the west, 'a situation which is not economic." Mr. Ansell warned against a possible shortage of railroad and steamship facilities, pointing out that there has been a 14 percent increase in carloadings during the first four months of 1941 compared compar-ed with the corresponding period of last year. He urged that brokers brok-ers place their orders early so as to anticipate needs. Mr. Evans 'described advertising advertis-ing campaigns which have helped increase purchase of beet sugar in the areas in which it is produced. produ-ced. Following - the - morning session the sugar brokers and salesmen were entertained at a luncheon at the Country club, after which they were taken to Alta, where they spent the night. No more formal meetings are planned in connection with the conference which began Monday. j I |
