Show ARMISTICE DAY MESSAGE What thoughts should come to us on Nov. ember 11, 1011, 2:3 years after the American people peo-ple .shouted one great song of triumph and glory for an amazing achievement? Our people, peace lovers, had suddenly been aroused to the fact that they had to make war. At least they thought so at the time, however we may feel about it now. With marvelous energy and organizing capacity, this nation of peace lovers proceeded to turn its great machine of peace time production into a war producing produc-ing agency. It put 2,000,000 men in France, and fought with an energy and efficiency and conquering power that amazed the world. No wonder our people shouted and sang and danced in the streets. How did they accomplish this grand achievement? Partly by the natural energy and mental ability of our people. But that was not the whole story. There was tremendous determination to win. Our people united as one solidified nation. There were dissenting elements of course who did not approve of the war, and it sometimes seems now as if those dissenters were right. Anyway at the time the nation was wyell uni-ted, uni-ted, and it was that unity of purpose that made tnc nation powerful. We need a similar unity now, if the nation is to accomplish grand results in the present situation. But our people do not propose to get that unity by the measures of repression by which the attempt is made to unify countries under dictators. If people will listen patiently to the arguments of those who think differently, and show willingness to yield their points of view when these are proved wrong-by wrong-by the logic of events, then we shall reach a degree of unity that will again give this nation great power. |
