He" writes": "The entrance of the United States in the World War has altered al-tered the political picture. We are, first of all, Americans. We will, of course, give the President our complete cooperation and support in winning the war. Nothing must be allowed to interfere in the vigorous, vig-orous, efficient prosecution of the battle to preserve American freedom. free-dom. "I have informed the President we stand ready as a Party to respond re-spond to any call for war or defense de-fense service he may make. We will do our full part to help unite this great nation in its struggle against aggression. "It has been repeatedly asked if unity in the war effort means the 1942 elections will be set aside and the two-party system abandoned. aban-doned. "The answer is No. The Constitution Con-stitution requires Congressional elections to be held every two years. We can not as a Nation set aside these elections without amending the Constitution. If we j 'dispensed with the elections we would be discontinuing our American Am-erican form of government. Once discontinued it might be impossible' impossi-ble' to restore. It must not be forgotten for-gotten .the war is for the preservation preser-vation of our system of Government Govern-ment and our way of life. "The Republican Party will support sup-port President Roosevelt to a man in the war effort, but 'it expects Senatorial Congressional and State elections to be held next year and it will fight to win. "We must retain -the two-party system. This is essential to protect pro-tect the liberties of the people and to maintain the American form of government. "Because it is so essential to maintain our Party we must be more alert than ever in perfecting the organization and making it Strang and virile. The country needs a strong, patriotic Republican Republi-can organization to aid in the prosecution of the war and in solving the great problems which will come with victory and peace. You are making a real contribution contri-bution to yous country when you devote your talents and energy to strengthening the Republican Party. Two months ago I suggested Lincoln Day celebrations to be held in every state as a means of bringing the Party a reminder of the noble motives which inspired its origin. These meetings should be held. Let us make them great i patriotic demonstrations. Let us publicly proclaim our support of ; the Administration in an irresistible irresis-tible effort to win the war. We I can at the same time with full ! consistency uphold the great prin-I prin-I ciples for which our Party stands." |
