Show they amended the ordinance so as to allow certain parties to keep open on Sunday, the said parties would keep open all the year round and sell all kinds of poods to the detriment of the busincs of those merchants who close their place of business on the Sabbath. As it now stands permits wiil be issued to those selling ice cream, etc., for the period of three months, and if the piivilege thus granted n abused the permit can be withdrawn and the ordinance will still be in force, the same s if no permit had been issued. The time these places will be allowed to be open is between the hours of 4 :30 p. m., and 9 :30 p. ta. All persons who open their place of business before half past four or keeping open after half past nine can, and no doubt will, be be prosecuted under the exi?tin ordinance. Young people are bound to have some enjoyment on tho Sabbath, and had the council decided not to allow the ce cream parlors to open oil Sunday, the young folks would have obtained their pleasure in suir.e other way, probably cards 01 long, lonely walks, and bth art far more dangerous than a visit to an ice cream parlor. The hour of closing is no doubt late enough but we would have preferred 10 or 10:30, as that would have allowed those who attend church, tho majority cf young people, more time to enjoy themselves, after the services are over, for boys will be boys and girls will be girls and if they cannot -have pleasure in one form they will in another. Sunday closing- Our c'ty council sceus to be endowed wi'.h muie wisdom than the average citizen gives them credit for. Their yood sense is ex- . emplified in- ths report of tbe committee com-mittee on laws and revisions in relation to ch sii g the ke cream parlors on Sunday, Instead of repealing or amending the ordinance, ordi-nance, as it was generally supposed they tv.uld, they reported in favor ofkeepirg the present ordinance in forte, and issue permits to the proprietor of ihe Re jyain parlors to keep fur a given number of hours on the Sabbath.
