Greaves secretary. The secretary lead the call which was as follows: The undersigned, citizens of Salt Lake city, are heartily la favor of the vigorous enforcement of our municipal laws, hereby invite their fellow cit zens who are legal voters and who are in sympathy with the law-enforcing policy of our worthy mayor and chief i police, to join in a cit'zens' meeting on Monday Mon-day evening, Aug. 1, at 8 o'clock, in Wasatch hall(former federal courtroom) fo take snch steps as patriotism and duty may require in backing up our city goverment in the work of enfovcins; the laws against gambling and the illegal liquor trade. After the reading of the call a -number of speakers were introduced, amouj; them L. S. Hall, Rev. Mr. Earl, Rev. B-F. B-F. Clay, Scott Anderson, Br. McNetee and Rev. T, C. Iliff, mo4 of whom were, until quite recently.members of the liber al party and worked for its cause. One Bpeaker Is quoted-as saying: "Now we want the city council to abide by their oaths they havo taken, and we ask the police judge that he fill his office without fear or favor, and he will go down to his grave with the best feelings and well wishes of this community, com-munity, whether he is appointed for a second term or not." The remarks of the other speakers were equally emphatic in -denonncia-tiou of the council and police judge. Mayor Baskin was highly complimented for his bravery in maintaining his stand against his party and the saloon keepers . The committee ou resolutions reported the following . which were unanimously adopted. ' , Whereas, The present -city government govern-ment was placed in power by a party which was organized for, the express ed purpose of the enforcement of law and order. Whereas, There is a strong tendency to set at defiance at this "present time some of onr most important municipal laws, we Join in the adoption of the blowing reiolot-wcs: , Resolved, That we hereby express our hearty approval and appreciation of the brave and faithful efforts of Mayor Baskin Bas-kin and Captain Samuel Paul audi such members of the city council with them in securing the enforcement of the laws against gambling, social immortality and the illegal traflc in liquor; that we pledge for them onr warmest support on their noble work of securing for us a well governed city is whose reputation we can take great pride. Resolved, That we hereby call upon members of the city council to do their duty, by so doing using the power lodged in their possession to strengthen the hands of the mayor and the chief of police in the work of enforcing the laws and to this end we call npou the council to remove from the important position of police justice, a man who virtually offers a premium to law breakers through the imposition of snch trifling fines as to make his administration of justice a public farce. Resolved, That we remind thn members mem-bers of the city council that it is just in porportlon that as they are active and united In enforcing the laws they can ! secure the confidenae and support of law abWing citizens. Resolved, That we hereby appeal to .the city council to revoke the license of any saloon keeper who violates the statutes stat-utes by selling lirmor to those of illegal age and by keeping open on Sunday. Resolved, Thai we tall upon the mem bers of the city council as our representatives represen-tatives to be prompt in using the resour ces of the city in the defease of any municipal officer who is involved in li'i-gation li'i-gation as the result of performing hit. sworn duty to the government and the people. Rev. T. C. Iliff was the last speaker. He concluded by saying: "The fight is on and it looks as if every citizen of Salt Lake should stand by God and home and country forever." At tho conclusion con-clusion of this gontlomans remarks the meeting adjourned. |
