Show I Carmen Strike In Two Cities New York. The subway motormen !nd switchmen on the interborough Rapid Transit company lines went on strike at 12:01 a. m. Tuesday. The strike was fostered by about 750 motormen mo-tormen and switchmen who bolted from the Brotherhood of Interborough Employees, the company union, formed form-ed an independent organization, and demanded wage increases. Shortly before the hour for the strike, leaders lead-ers of the workers claimed that their forces had been increased to 100Q through the addition of about 200 con- i ductors and a number of men from i other departments. As the striking motormen, ending their runs, stepped from the trains, they were replaced by strike-breakers brought from other cities by the company. Two policemen police-men rode on the front platform ol each train. Interborough Rapid Tram ! sit company officials predicted thai the strike would not cripple their un- ! derground lines, as did the last strike, ' in August, 1919. On that occasion all rapid transit in Manhattan was at a ! standstill three days after 1-1,000 em- ployees walked out. |
