Show . FROM KKC'HKTARY WALLACE This nation cannot afford to permit per-mit the breaking down of its own agriculture, even if for a time we can buy food and Qtlier tarm products cheaper fro msomeone else. We can not under any circum stances afford to permit the present discouraging conditions to continue and result in greatly decreased production, pro-duction, because that decreased production pro-duction may mean exhorbitantly high nrices within a few years. We have not considered a we must the heavy additional burden im posed upon producers by the increased increas-ed freight rates and the large increase in-crease in other marketing charges. These incerased rates are a differential differen-tial imposed upon our own producers produc-ers and the benefit of- our foreign competitors. Practically all agricultural products pro-ducts should at once be given adequate ade-quate protection against foreign com petition. There is some talk of establishing es-tablishing the old import duties on farm products. In many cases those duties, if added would not equal the extra cost of marketing. To any rates which may be levied now should be addsd an amount equal to the extra ex-tra freight charges in getting products pro-ducts to the constiming centers. The sooner we get down , to studying study-ing this whole national situation, the better it is going to he for all of-us. It is even more important to the industrial in-dustrial sections that our agricultural agricultur-al situation be upt upon a thoroughly thorough-ly sound foundation than it Is to the farmers themselves. . .A : |
