Show ARBOR DAY IS OBSERVED HERE The Arbor Day exercises conducted conduct-ed by the Service Star legion, were one of the most solemn and impressive impres-sive memorials ever given in Milford. The manner in which everyone responded re-sponded to assist in any and every way, plainly showed it was an event that aJl entered into with feeling of love and respect. A large number of persons were present despite the damp weather, and a marked stillness fell as the song "America was announced', led by Mrs. Boyd White and Dan fergu-son, fergu-son, and accompanied in an artistic style by Mrs. Wm. Dobson on the organ or-gan and joined in by everyone who was present. Mr. I-I. H. Pitchforth offered up the prayer. It was grand, repleting and consoling, and as his words rang out to the suffering hearts, there was scarcely a dry eye in the assembly. Mrs. Annie J. Atkin read the Governor's Gov-ernor's proclamation for Arbor day and concluded with the following poem. "Sleep Swe'elty in your humble graves; grav-es; Sleep martyrs of a fallen cause; Though yet no marble column craves crav-es The pilgrim here to pause. In seeds of Laurel in the earth. The blossom of your fame is blown, And somewhere waiting for its birth The shaft is in the stone. Meanwhile, behalf the tardy years Which keep in trust your storied tombs, Behold! mothers, sisters bring their tears And these memorial blooms. Stoop, Angels, hither from the skies. There is no holier spot of ground Than where defeated valor lies, By mourning beauty crowned. The names of the boys for whom we are assembled here toclfi-y, to show honor, love and respect, by planting four Black Walnut trees, are Claude Morse, Frank Walter Edwards, Harry Har-ry D. Keith and K. Sims." Then Mrs. Dobson sent out the beautiful melodious tunes on the organ, or-gan, "Just Before the- Battle, Mother' Mrs. Boyd White and Mr. Dan Ferguson Fergu-son singing out in such a wonderful Jway that everyone seemed dazed w'ith the heavenly strains of this sad but effective song. Never before did they sing as they sang that day! No crowned head or extalled personage could hear more perfect singing and every eyei was moist; but every heart was graceous. Mr. Leonard Bowen was inspired with eloquence a.nd power to give out the wonderful speech he did. and 'every word dropped on eager listening listen-ing ears with satisfaction and benefits. bene-fits. The planting of the trees was done by citizens and service boys, Mrs. Bess M. Coon announcing the name for which each tree was planted. Tt is impossible to express gratitude grati-tude sufficient to all who helped to make this such a success, but Mrs. Karl Carlton does deserve special mention for the work in obtaining the trees, helping to conduct the planting with H. H. Pitchforth, also Rev. Zook for giving the organ for use during the services. |
