Show - THRIFT HAS PERCHED ABOVE WHTTE HOUSE j Until President and Mrs. Harding! moved into the White House, it. has always been the practice of the House , Appropriations committee to provide for the purchase of furniture' for the private apartments of the president and his family. But, as an example for Government economy, President and Mrs. Harding have no intention of using a Congressional appropriation appropria-tion for furnishing these apartments. Instea.d, the furniture will come from their own Marion and Washington homes. Give the average American earner: an opportunity of furnishing a home! lavishly with Oriental rugs, mahogany mahog-any furniture, beautiful paintings and costly draperies, and he will take i it even though he may know tha t j the funds, making this purchase possible pos-sible and coming out of the public j treasury, will work a hardship upon the countrySs taxpayers. It is a difficult dif-ficult task to show the average earner earn-er that in the conduct of his own affairs af-fairs and in the disbursement of his own earnings he should practice thrift and economy. Economy like charity, should begin be-gin at home. It is easy enough to straddle a neighbor's fence and talk long and vigorously about the plans j and programsi that if followed out byj the "other fellow, would improve conditions, but the real job is for individuals themselves to begin a program and economy and thrift at home. The United States Treasury Department, De-partment, in carrying on the Savings movement, is endeavoring to impress upon the mind of every American earner desiring sound advice, the advisability ad-visability of beginning a program of thrift and economy in their own personal per-sonal affairs. It urges that every earner make a budget and in it make allowance for regular saving and sound investment. It urges that whenever any individual makes an appropriation out of his own funds and for his own needs, he use the judgment of President and Mrs.' Harding when they, appreciating the necessity for a program of economy,! in putting the business of our country coun-try back to normal, decided it unwise un-wise to spend the funds commonly provided by the House Appropriations Appropria-tions committee for the purchase of furniture: when this furniture might be brought from their own homes Marion and Washington. ( That every earner may begin sav-, ing at home, special Savings Securities Securi-ties have been issued by the United States Treasury department. Thesp securities from the Jo-cent Thrift Ptamn to the $1000 Treasury Savings Sav-ings Certificate are the best in the world. Talk with your Postmaster about them. |
