Official announcement of the signing sign-ing of the Austrian armistice reached the premiers while they were in session ses-sion in the apartment of Colonel House, President Wilson's representative, representa-tive, Sunday afternoon, and gave the greatest satisfaction. The armistice with Austria was signed Sunday afternoon by General Diaz, the Italian commander in chief, according to an official announcement made ar uiiiiiiin. Ol'ticial announcement that the armistice ar-mistice had been signed readied the state department at Washington on ; Sunday; In making this known, officials offi-cials gave no indication of the terms ' imposed, nor was there any explanation explana-tion of why cessation of hostilities had been delayed twenty-four hours or more after the actual signing of the articles of surrender. The generally accepted view, however, seemed to be that it was desired to have virtually all Italian soil freeil of enemy troops before the Italian armies were committed com-mitted to end their attacks upon the routed Austrian forces. Military men here said the terms which the supreme war council had prepared would make it impossible for the Austrians to renew hostilities, probably including the disarming of the enemy troops and occupation of strategic points as well. Some of these,' namely, Trent and Trieste, already al-ready have been occupied by the Italian Ital-ian and allied forces. Free movement of the allied forces through Austria to attack Germany from the south, should the supreme war commander decide such a stroke necessary in the future, also is expected ex-pected to lie stipulated. Unofficial reports re-ports from Vienna said the Germans were preparing for such an attack by feverishly digging trendies on land and fortifying the Barian frontier. |
