Show v MURDOCH NOTES "The secret of success in life is for one to be ready for his opportunity when it comes." Disraeli. Urgent instructions are being sent out by the Government at Washington Washing-ton that the- high schools shall be filled to their capacity during war time in order that he nation may avoid the dangers of retrogression. Beaver has been most patriotic to every government requirement and will not, we take it, fall down in this. The Murdock Academy can take care of five hundred students of high school gradt, why not secure places for them now? This circular, above referred to, points out that the ultimate success of our country in war depends even more upon filling our high schools ana colleges to capacity ca-pacity than upon the immediate increase in-crease in war materials and food supplies. The argument is, in effect, that iS the war is a long one there will be great need, at its close, for men and women of education, training train-ing and skill to maintain the great structure of free government against the demoralizing influences of ignorance, ignor-ance, corruption and anarchy, cus as are now gnawing at the vitals of the new Russian government. -An excerpt from the circular says: "When the war is over, whether within a few months or after many years, there will be such demands upon this government fpr men and women of scientific knowledge, technical tech-nical skill and general culture as have never before come to any country. coun-try. The whole world must be rebuilt: re-built: This country must play a far more important part in agriculture, manufacturing and commenrce and also in things of cultural life art, literature, music, scientific discovery. discov-ery. "The draft age is above that of many high school and college students. stu-dents. Therefore, a right conception of patriotism should induce all students stu-dents to remain in school who cannot can-not render great immediate service to the ci'ur-.'.ry in sonic other oxcep- j. tional way. "The attendance in the high1 school should be increased and more boys and yiris should be induced to remain until their course is complete, com-plete, 1 (as a patriotic duty). All laboratories and manual training shops in hii:h schools should be run at full capacity. In all high schools in vhich domestic science and art ( are taught, large units of time' should be given in the fall anil summer sum-mer to Keil Cross sewing and preservation pres-ervation of foods. "The desire to render immediate service is praiseworthy and the spirit but, it is elective setviee ihi. anally counts. -This goal of effective service ser-vice should ever be kepi in mind." |
