Show A BLACK DISGRACE PORTLAND shipyard employes who "played hookey" Saturday afternoon, Sept. 7, insisting on a half-holiday, went back to work on Monday and the Incident was closed until the next Saturday, when it was expected they would take another half-holiday off unless the government intervenes, say newspaper reports. Trouble began Saturday afternoon, when six thousand members of Boilermakers' Boil-ermakers' I'nion refused to work, following a vote or their organization. organiza-tion. The men desired a continuation continua-tion of the 44-hour week, which the Macey agreement gave them during June, July and August. The Macey agreement provides for a 48-hour week beginning September 1. This is not a matter to joke about and excuse ex-cuse with the word "hookey." Men who will commit an act of this kind are deserters and a disgrace to the state and nation, and the press and public should demand punishment for such action. Every honest and loyal citizen of this country is working work-ing to the limit to furnish our boys at the front with all necessary supplies, sup-plies, and to see a bunch of loafers lay down their tools and quit work simply to force a half-holiday the year round makes one's blood boil and is demoralizing to workmen in other industries. The question is, are labor unions more powerful than the "Union?" Are exempted workmen, work-men, receiving double and treble the pay they used to get, to be further pampered at the expense of boys on the firing line? We believe not. |
