Davis of I Harvard Medical school and Drs. V. L. Loomis, E. N. Harvey and G. Hobart of the Loomis laboratory at Tuxedo, N. Y., have found in brain wave studies reported' to the journal. jour-nal. Science. Their studies also suggest that clues to the cause of many mental diseases or abnormalities abnormal-ities may be found in studies of the normal falling asleep process. Four kinds of brain waves or electrical patterns appear during the going to sleep process, they found. First there is the state when the person is at rest but awake. Next follow different kinds of waves in the drowsy "floating" state. A second intermediate state is characterized char-acterized by a still different brain I wave pattern, and this merges into the fourth pattern found in I real sleep. I Of practical importance, they I point out, is the fact that the pat- terns of early sleep in normal per- sons are strikingly like those seen I in some mentally sick or otherwise abnormal persons. Scientists mak- J ing brain wave studies should not f be misled by the pattern of an un- I suspected dozing or "floating" state f into diagnosing a state of mental I abnormality. This similarity suggests that k many abnormal mental conditions I may depend on general modifica- I tions of brain function which are I fundamentally like those of normal I sleep. |
