Show I LIVE HERE! The story is told that one day a traveler in an out-of-the-way place came upon a humble house on a side road. Though removed from the main highway Where the passing throng might see it, it was well kept and gave appearance of being occupied by some one who took a great interest in making its appearance homelike and attractive. The traveler was attracted by the well-kept yard, the fence covered with blooming roses, the lawn and the garden. Upon coming up to the gate he was surprised to find an old colored woman as the sole occupant and owner of the place. In his admiration admira-tion he said, "This is a beautiful, home-like place you have here". The old woman straightened up from her work among the flowers and, beaming radiantly, said, "Course it is, I lives here". What a sermon there is in that one sentence to every one who maintains a home in this community. Notwithstanding the fact that the old woman lived on a by-road where few people passed her door, she was interested in making her home beautiful and attractive because she lived there. What a difference it would make to this town if every one had the same pride, inspired for the same reason, that the old colored color-ed woman had ! No other reason was needed in her mind for her effort to make things beautiful, beyond the simple fact that it was her home and that she lived there. M |
