Show New Token Plan Given Explanation iThe new ration token plan effective ef-fective February 27 will not change the housewife's point buying buy-ing power, the office of price administration ad-ministration says, even though, on a monthly basis, she will average ave-rage about four less meats-fats points than at present, and two more processed food points. The fact that ration buying power will be kept stable was pointed out by O P A because reports re-ports indicate that some people believe the changeover to token shopping may injolve a loss of red stamp buying power and a gain in blue stamp buying power. Buying power under rationing will be kept on an even keel by adjusting point values very slightly slight-ly at the time the new plan goes into effect. After February 27, each red and blue stamp in your ration book will be worth 10 points, therefore the need for the tokens in making change in the future. Under the present rationing program, 16 points become valid for meats and fats at the beginning begin-ning of each week roughly a total of 64 points a month. Under the token plan 30 points will become be-come valid at the beginning of each two-week period, a total of approximately 60 points each month. At present, 48 points become valid for processed foods each month. Under the token plan 50 points will become valid on the first of each month. Point values will be slightly lowered so that the housewife will be able to get the same amount of meats-fats with her 60 points J as she now gets with her 64 points. -Similarly, processed foods point values will be adjusted upward up-ward slightly so the housewife's 50 points under the token plan will buy no more than she now gets with her 48 points. The public will use these new tokens much like they now use pennies and the sales tax tokens. A consumer who buys items worth 23 blue points, for example, will give his retailer two blue stamps (a total of 20 points) and three blue tokens, (each worth one point). If he has no tokens, he will gve his retailer three blue stamps (30 points) and receive seven blue tokens in change. The only difference in the two kinds of tokens is in their color. The. colors match the stamps with which they will be used, blue stamps and blue tokens for processed pro-cessed foods, red stamps and red tokens for meats and fats. The tokens will not be interchangeable, interchange-able, however. In other words, red tokens only may be used for ' meats, fats, etc., and blue tokens . only for processed foods, j The tokens will have no expiration expira-tion date, as have the stamps, and this, no doubt, will lead to some hoarding of tokens by the public, who will be inclined to convert their unused stamps to tokens and keep them for future use. Another result of the new system likely j , will be the end to spending sprees indulged in by most housewives the last day stamps have been valid. t |
