Show Officers Required Report Accidents Drastic action against peace officers of-ficers who disregard the new state law requiring that serious traffic accidents be reported to the state has been promised by Attorney General Joseph Chez. The attorney general made his announcement after he had been informed that there is general disregard, especially on the part of peace officers in the smaller communities, of this requirement. Mr. Chez said that action looking to removal from office will be taken against such violators. The law requires that any accident acci-dent involving injury or death or property damage of $50 or more must be reported to the state tax commission and the highway patrol. pa-trol. This is so the tax commission commis-sion may take action on revocation revoca-tion of drivers' licenses and so the highway patrol can plan more effective ef-fective traffic safety campaigns. First of all, however, the law provides that any person involved in such an accident must report within 24 hours to law enforcement enforce-ment officers of the city and county in which the accident occurs. oc-curs. The reports from the peace officers of-ficers must be submitted to the state not later than 10 days following fol-lowing the accident, and Mr. Chez says that any officer failing to do so will be deemed guilty of misconduct mis-conduct in office. Both the tax commission and the highway patrol are making full reports on the status of accident acci-dent reports in cities and counties. o |
