Show Allen G. Hedges Is Shot At Caliente Allen G. Hedges, chief special officer offi-cer for the L. A. and S. L. railroad company, narrowly escaped instant death on Tuesday night at Caliente when he was shot by Albert Miller, proprietor of the Caliente Cleaners. Immediately, following the shooting Miller was taken into custody by! Sheriff Culverwell and placed in thei jail in Caliente. Sheriff Culverwell took his gun, a .38-cal. revolver, i from him, Miller making no resist- j ance . The railroad officer came upon Miller and his wife rustling ice where the small ice cars are parked; near the Caliente ice house about i 9:30 p. m. .telling Miller that he had no right to take ice and told him, it was stated, to beat it. Miller, considerably consid-erably incensed, it was stated, replied re-plied heatedly to the remarks of the officer, who thereupon, it was alleg ed, slapped Miller, who drew a .38-1 caliber revolver from his pocket and' fired at Hedges, two shots 'entering' his body, one passing through the right hip, and the other passing along and down by the left hip. Miller's Mil-ler's gun when examined by Sheriff1 Colverwell, showed, however, that four shots had apparently been re-i cently fired. Eye witnesses to the affair stated to the officers that Miller, then realizing what he had done, turned and ran, his wife also leaving at about the time that Hedges was alleged to have struck j Miller. ; Hedges did not drop when hit and it was stated that he shot four times at Miller, but, due to weakened condition, con-dition, none of the shots took effect. Luckily, no one was hit by the flying: hail of lead and Hedges was rushed to Dr. L. L. Bristol for treatment, j while Miller was placed under arrest by Sheriff Culverwell, offering no resistance, but insisting that Hedges struck him first. The affair created considerable stir in Caliente, the rattle of the shooting causing many to run for shelter at Burt's pharmacy, which was close to the scene of the affair. Dr. Bristol ; stated that both wounds were in thej pelvic region, one bullet passing; clear through and somewhat shatter-! ing the bones. The other shot in the opposite hip was in much the samej position, the bullet being extracted j by Dr. Bristol near the skin after j passing through the hip. Always providing that no complications takej place, Dr. Bristol stated that neither would necessarily prove very serious,! though it would take a complete examination ex-amination to determine the question. , Officer Hedges, who passed a fair j night in spite of the great shock, wasj taken to the hospital in Salt Lake; City on train No. 8 Wednesday morning and it was stated that he! stood the journey well. Sheriff Culverwell stated that he I would confer with District Attorney ( Wadsworth in the matter and that no charges would be brought until the condition of Hedges was definitely determined. Albert Miller in the meantime remains in jail. Caliente Herald. |
