Show 1 7 Livestocks I (Mj-fo l.c.s Angele-,, October 0, Tlieie ui'c great cxpectat ions on pal t of the livestock intercuts, pa rt icula ily tlie cattle growers, of favorable price reaction when the so-called meat code gels under way; but we should keep in mind that it takes time to get such things going and that in the meantime mean-time we have to deal with the heavy seasonal run of cattle from the northwestern north-western rages and that after nil the lows of supply anil demand are bound to have their play. The industrial situation seems to be progressing, although a good many unexpected obstacles have a- risen, but it U reasonable to suppose that they may be overcome, and that i wo are really on a forward march. , Another tiling to keep in mind is 1 that fundamentally hogs only are in-j in-j eluded in the code, and it is a question of what side agreements can be I worked out with recet to other j classes of meat food livestock, i It seems reasonable to say that if j the low prices prevailing on cattle and sheep interfere with the carrying out of tho avowed purpose of the act, it is permissible to pluce under control con-trol uny commodity that interferes with the carrying out of the plan. Within the past thirty days the eastern east-ern markets have reflected an advance ad-vance of 50c to $1.00 in hog prices, but we are quite a ways off yet from the basing prices of the pre-war period, with the fall ami winter movement move-ment of hogs to market staring us in the face. Finally, the question is of passing I the product along to the people. Our information is that the retail prices 'of all kinds of meat food products j have been materially increased but i apparently the packer has not recived his share of the increase, hence the grower is still holding the bag. Ho.v long this situation will continue is a I question. The whole situation i-fraught i-fraught with a great many "it's", but wo must have confidence to believe that with the underlying spirit that exists among the people as a whole, we are going to get the job done. So far as the stocker and feeder cattle business is concerned,' the demand de-mand in this territory may be called practically nil for two reasons: fir.-t,' the lack of rain and drouthy conditions con-ditions pretty much throughout the ! southwest Arizona and New Mexico 'have had some pretty fair rains but j they were not timely, hence the benefits bene-fits have not been as great as ex-j j pected. California is bone dry. I The second factor is that until ' there is some reaction in fat prices, ; it is pretty hard to see how buyers are going to be very much interested in view of the experience of tlie pa.-it two or three years. The only thing I can see in the situation is to market mar-ket fat cattle and calves when they are ready, and so far as stockers and feeders are concerned we will just have to watch and pray for moisture and hope that fat prices will improve so as to give the buyers some encouragement en-couragement to believe that they are at least going to be able to hold their money together. o |
